Inspiration and Foundation
In July 2017, Alanagh was inspired by a YouTube video to procure a purpose-built trishaw for providing bike rides to those who are less mobile. Recognising the need in her community, she partnered with local supporter Alicia Gangemi to fund the initial purchase.
Community Support
With the backing of volunteers, businesses, and local government, Cycling Without Age Sorrento was launched, offering free rides to seniors and individuals with limited mobility along West Coast Drive between Mullaloo and Trigg. This grassroots initiative, inspired by the international movement from Copenhagen, quickly gained traction.
Expansion and Collaboration
As the positive response grew, Alanagh worked to establish additional Trishaw services around Australia. She collaborated with like-minded individuals, leading to the founding of Cycling Without Age Western Australia and later, Cycling Without Age Australia in 2019.
In 2020, Alanagh refocused her efforts on her local community, believing that support is strongest when it comes from those who live and work in the area they are providing for. She stepped back from her national role to concentrate on Sorrento, forming the charity Motion by the Ocean Inc. This organisation would not only deliver Cycling Without Age Sorrento but also introduce a secondary program called Moving Food, which emerged in response to the challenges posed by COVID-19 and continues to serve the community today.
Community Impact
Motion by the Ocean Inc. has made a significant impact, providing meaningful coastal rides for over 9,000 Trishaw passengers and cycling more than 70,000 passenger kilometres. The organisation has also facilitated 3,800 volunteer shifts to support our work. Additionally, the Moving Food program has delivered over 52,000 meals to seniors and vulnerable individuals in the community.
As the Motion by the Ocean enters its seventh year, it remains the most regular Trishaw service of its type of its kind in the country. In this time, our Trishaw rides have remained a daily service.
Continued Growth
Now boasting a fleet of six Trishaws, Motion by the Ocean Inc, continues to grow. In addition to providing rides between Trigg Surf Life Saving Club and Mullaloo SLSC from Sorrento SLSC, their Cycling Without Age Sorrento program has expanded to include group rides from Hillarys Boat Harbour.
Excitingly, once the new building at SSLSC is completed, it will serve as the home base for the charity, highlighting its value to the community.
Meaningful Journey
Motion by the Ocean Inc. has not only provided essential services but also fostered new friendships, illustrating the power of community support and kindness. Alanagh and her dedicated team have demonstrated how a simple idea can blossom into a significant movement, positively impacting the lives of many in their community.
